Joe the Plumber can stick it...

on Monday, May 4, 2009

Toward the end of the 2008 Presidential campaign, a desperate John McCain used the image of Joe the Plumber to try and finally connect with average, every day Americans. It proved too late for him to make a charge, but Joe the Plumber soon became etched into the American politically psyche. He has now appeared on The Mike Huckabee Show, Larry King Live, Hannity, etc...However, Joe got my blood boiling the tonight when I read an interview he did with Christianity Today (the nation's leading Evangelical magazine.) In it, Joe discusses his faith and how it shapes his political views. In one answer on gay marriage he states, "I've had some friends that are actually homosexual. And, I mean, they know where I stand, and they know that I wouldn't have them anywhere near my children." What a load of crap. It's one thing to have certain theological views on human sexuality, it's another to treat a certain group of people as a danger to children because of their sexual preference. I think Joe needs a lesson on conservative history: In 1978, a segment of the California population tried to pass Prop. 6, known as the Briggs Initiative. If it passed it would have meant that any California teacher could be fired if he or she was gay or publicly "supported homosexuality" (whatever that phrase means.) This debate is the focal point of the Sean Penn movie, MILK. The proposition looked like it was on track to pass in the Novemeber election, until former California governor Ronald Reagan publically came out against its passage. Reagan stated that, "the potential of infringing on basic rights of privacy and perhaps even constitutional rights." It should also be noted that Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford also publicly objected to the amendment. All three of these men, along with Harvey Milk, should be hailed for their courage to stand up to the misguided and close minded ideas of Prop. 6's advocaters. So next time Joe feels threatened by gay men and women being around his kids, let's hope he remembers that such a position is not conservative. To suggest otherwise is careless and deceptive.

P.S. I saw this cartoon today in the Herald and laughed out loud while eating lunch in the dining center. I thought I'd share it with you.

You make a good point...let's see if I can interpret it. There are some hunters who shoot at stop signs and insulators on electric poles. These people are not called hunters, they should be called vandals. Likewise, there are some homosexuals who pray on young children. They should be called child molesters. There are also heterosexuals that pray on young children. They should also be called child molesters. And when the child molesters go to prison, they are called "Mary's." Nuff said.
