So I'm taking a sociology class right now on Population. After a couple of weeks I totally realized how every issue can in some way link directly to issues of population. One key concern right now in the US is that all those classified as "skilled immigrants" are fed up with the US and going back to their home countries. These "skilled immigrants" are engineers, doctors, professors, scientists, etc...They wait in line for years just to get a permit (the H1-B visa) to come live and work in the US. Anyway, they are leaving....and our governmental policies are not helping the situation in this regard. There was a provision in the stimulus bill that said any company that receives federal bailout dollars has to document that the money is being used to save or create jobs for American workers, not foreign workers. Thus, we are pushing these "skilled immigrants" away. Why is that a problem? Well these "skilled immigrants" created nearly half of all Silicon Valley tech companies as well as 35% of all US patents. These individuals are vital to our long term economic growth and for some reason our government sees the need to push them away. Now is the time to invest in individuals that will get this economy moving again. There are many ways to do this, but one of them is not pushing away these "skilled immigrants."
