Are we dealing with the consequences?

With the passage of Obamacare and cap-and-trade coming down the pipe there seems to be a lot of panic in the air. President Obama's approval numbers are tanking; once popular Senators from around the country are going find themselves in long, expensive re-election campaigns; and the nation waits for the business cycle to rebound while trying to make sense of all the stimulus and tax schemes going on in Washington. It's easy for conservatives to stand up and tell the disgruntled electorate, "I Told You So." However, there seems to be a trend going on now within the conservative movement that is making me quite nervous. It's the trend that has weakened the standing and effectiveness of conservatism throughout the nation and is one of the main reasons disastrous ideas like Obamacare and the ever increasing welfare state continue to thrive. Let's call this trend "the moderate purge."
I am an avid reader of the conservative blog "Hot Air." However one thing really mad me angry a while back. Currently in Florida there is a heated Republican Senate primary going on between current Gov. Charlie Crist and Florida state politician Marco Rubio. Rubio has been hailed as the poster child of the conservative movement. Hot Air found it necessary to lament him as a RINO (Republican In Name Only) because he said if he was governor he probably would have accepted some stimulus funds for his state. So one disagreement with the activist right and you are a RINO. This is such a dangerous precedent for the movement to accept.
You look at the current make up of Congress and you see a Republican Party that is almost entirely evangelical, white, and Southern. This faction of the party has insisted on focusing on the same issues for the last thirty years without much luck of changing things. This faction has become defensive instead of proactive. Today's conservative movement would have purged great conservatives such as Barry Goldwater (who despised the religious right and who on nation television said that someone ought to kick Jerry Falwell right in the ass), William F. Buckley (who believed in ending the war on drugs), etc...
I know that certain Republican Senators and Congresssman often annoy us conservatives for their often shameless attempts at bi-partisanship. But when it comes down to it would you rather have Deleware's Senate seat continue to be the 60th vote for Democrats or would you rather have it be held by a moderate Republican who will often deny Harry Reid his fillibuster proof majority? A great thing we can learn from the moderate Republicans is there willingness to actually discuss issues that conservatives have refused in the past. When, before Obamacare, did you hear Republicans talk about free market solutions in health care from 2001-2007 when they were in the majority? When did you hear them discuss free market solutions to the environment, education, federal budget, science and technology, etc...The answer is that the current hyper activist, tea party faction of the Republican party is stuck in the defensive instead of being truly activist and proposing solutions and ideas. Moderates might not be perfect but there are a lot good honest Republicans that may disagree with the current faction on a couple of issues that still would be better than those pushing through the bills right now. Let's end the purge and start re-building a conservative majority that is fresh, enlightened, and truly active.
